A former second assistant director on the popular sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory” has filed a lawsuit in California against Warner Bros. Television because he claims to have been fired due to his age. The man alleges age discrimination after his duties changed when he turned 50 in 2012. At the time, the show was in its sixth season. The plaintiff has been a member of the Directors Guild of American for 30 years and had worked on the program since its premiere.
In his filing, the plaintiff alleges that the production company wanted younger people to oversee the program. Prior to being phased out, he was involved in numerous aspects of the production including working with the actors, helping them with makeup and wardrobe, and preparing them for their scenes.
Younger members of the staff were given his duties and, after the eighth season of the program, he was fired. The monetary damages he seeks have not been specified. The man retained his title as assistant director, but was not allowed to continue fulfilling the duties he had done in the past. Warner Bros. did not comment on the case.
As with any job, there is the chance that employment issues can arise and a dismissal will occur. It is important to understand one’s rights under the law.
