Workplace discrimination is an issue that many minorities may encounter. For those who are interested in working in the tech industry in California or other parts of the country, they should be aware that it can occur even before they are on the job.

For example, women of color may face certain challenges when being interviewed for a position in the tech industry. Obvious biases may be on display, taking the form of questions or statements that indicate the interviewer believes that women are unable to perform technical work very well. Leaders in the tech industry, such as Facebook, Apple, Twitter and Google, have stated in recent years that they are committed to diversity within their companies. However, other than the release of diversity reports, there has been no substantial progress.

In 2015, only 11 percent of the leadership position occupants were women. Twitter and Pinterest had no African-Americans in leadership positions, while Apple, Facebook and Yahoo had only 3, 2 and 1 percent, respectively. Based on the conversations with multiple workers at all levels of tech companies, the primary factors contributing to the discrimination is an exclusive workplace culture and discriminatory recruiting practices.

Employees of tech companies, who are primarily while males, who consider potential candidates for tech positions will generally begin with their own network of contacts, which are mostly other white males. Some employees who do try to recruit from other candidate pools can be branded as someone who does "diversity hiring".Minorities, including people of color and women, can face many forms of discrimination in all aspects of the employment process. This includes during the interview stage as well as whenon the job. An attorney who practices employment law may be consulted about any occurrences of workplace discrimination and what steps to take to remedy the situation.
