There are several types of disability that people can have. Therefore, there are different types of disability benefits provided by the U.S. government. Learn about the various programs available in California and the basic requirements of each one.

How one disability differs from another

A person can either have a partial or total disability that is temporary or permanent. A permanent total disability is the most severe state that, according to insurance companies, is an extreme loss of the physical ability to work that is expected to last the person’s lifetime. A permanent partial disability is when a person works with limitations that prevent a full range of functions.

There are two main types of disability benefits: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The SSI program provides regular payments to disabled adults, children and senior citizens. The SSDI program differs by basing payments on the recipient’s past work efforts. It provides full benefits to individuals with permanent disabilities.

How the government provides for disabled individuals

The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides various forms of disability insurance. The main differences are the benefits and eligibility requirements of each program. For instance, people with certain disability issues are automatically qualified for the SSI program. Those who qualify for SSDI benefits must meet minimum income requirements and have worked a certain duration of time.

Know the similarities and differences of each SSA program

People who are recipients of Social Security disability insurance often confuse one program for another. Those who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income often believe they are also eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance. It is crucial that individuals become knowledgeable on what type of disability they have and how to become eligible for each separate type of Social Security disability insurance program.
